Franklin’s Spark

Projection Mapping at The Franklin Institute

In collaboration with Crafted Action, I served as experiential motion designer for "Franklin’s Spark," an immersive multimedia installation that utilizes cutting edge techniques and high-resolution 3D projection mapping to transform the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial into a dynamic educational experience in celebration his 320th birthday.

My role included: concepting, assisting the flat design process, directing narration and audio, prototyping and producing the final motion design assets.

PROCESS

A story 320 years in the making

In order to properly celebrate Benjamin Franklin’s 320th birthday, we teamed up with The Franklin Institute to create an immersive multimedia experience telling the story of Franklin’s Spark and the importance of following your curiosity.

Our canvas was a complex form factor: 180 degree dome with deep coffers, ledges, windows, pillars and digital signage.

In honor of Benjamin Franklin’s curiosity, we explored a variety of traditional and cutting edge techniques: from drawing on paper to AI style transfers.

Testing at scale—before it’s possible

Since we had to develop the visuals before we were able to test at scale, we had to get creative. By utilizing Touch Designer and After Effects, we were able to recreate the environment and view the experience virtually.
